New Writer Joins Staff of Hawkeye Sports News

Veteran sports journalist and Iowa City native Brian Campbell has joined the staff of Hawkeyesportsnews.com.

Campbell’s primary duties will be University of Iowa football and basketball. He has spent more than 20 years covering nearly every major pro and college sport, including football, basketball, baseball and golf. He has been a writer and editor for The Tribune Co., managing editor of Golfweek magazine and sports editor of The Daily Commercial.

Campbell is also a former member of The Associated Press Sports Editors, the Golf Writers Association of America and the Florida Sports Writers Association. He is also credited with starting the country’s first fantasy golf magazine and the nation’s first syndicated golf page.

Among his many career highlights, Campbell lists being over the pit wall with Jimmie Johnson’s pit crew during the Daytona 500, shooting 3-pointers during the NBA All-Star game, catching bass with Aaron Martens during the Bassmaster Classic and walking a practice round with Arnold Palmer during the Bay Hill Classic.

Campbell has two college degrees, including a B.A. in journalism. After graduating from Iowa City West, he attended the University of Iowa in the early ‘80s before moving to Florida to pursue a career in sports writing.
